The 5 Basic Rules of Succulent Care (Beginner-Friendly Guide)

If you’re new to succulents or thinking about starting, these are the five most important basics every succulent owner should know.

Give Them Plenty of Light

Succulents love light. Most varieties need bright sunlight for several hours a day to grow properly. Without enough light, succulents will stretch out, lose their compact shape, and become weak.

A sunny windowsill, balcony, or outdoor spot with indirect sunlight works best. If you’re growing them indoors, placing them near a south- or east-facing window is ideal.

Tip: If your succulent starts leaning or stretching, it’s asking for more light.

Avoid Overwatering

Overwatering is the most common reason succulents die. These plants store water in their leaves, which means they don’t need frequent watering.

Always let the soil dry out completely before watering again. When you do water, soak the soil thoroughly, then wait until it’s fully dry before the next watering.

Rule of thumb: It’s better to underwater a succulent than overwater it.

Use Well-Draining Soil

Succulents cannot survive in regular potting soil because it holds too much moisture. They need soil that drains quickly so their roots don’t sit in water.

A cactus or succulent soil mix works best. You can also improve drainage by adding sand, perlite, or pumice to regular soil.

Healthy soil = healthy roots.

Always Use Pots With Drainage Holes

Drainage holes are essential for succulents. Without them, excess water has nowhere to go, which leads to root rot.

Clay or terracotta pots are especially good for succulents because they absorb moisture and help the soil dry faster.

If a pot doesn’t have drainage holes, it’s not a good choice for succulents.

Don’t Overcare

Succulents thrive on minimal care. They don’t need daily attention, frequent feeding, or misting.

Too much care can actually harm them. Occasional watering, proper light, and well-draining soil are usually enough to keep them happy.

When it comes to succulents, less is more.
